Friday Faves: Harry Truman, Ass Kicker

Yes, my Friday Fave this week is Harry S. Truman, 33rd President of the United States who died in 1972. How did he make my Friday Fave this week? I read this quote:

Republicans approve of the American farmer, but they are willing to help him go broke. They stand four-square for the American home–but not for housing. They are strong for labor–but they are stronger for restricting labor’s rights. They favor minimum wage–the smaller the minimum wage the better. They endorse educational opportunity for all–but they won’t spend money for teachers or for schools. They think modern medical care and hospitals are fine–for people who can afford them. They consider electrical power a great blessing–but only when the private power companies get their rake-off. They think American standard of living is a fine thing–so long as it doesn’t spread to all the people. And they admire of Government of the United States so much that they would like to buy it. (Address in St. Paul at the Municipal Auditorium. October 13, 1948)

Harry Truman was an ass kicker. He spoke plainly, and he spoke the truth. This is mild. Google Harry Truman quotes, and you’ll find a quick-witted, sharp-tongued leader who spoke from background of knowledge, holding nothing back. The sad thing is, switch out a few words, and you could insert this quote into any politicians stump-speech today. It really gives you an idea how long we’ve been dealing with the destructive policies of the rightwing in this country.

I’ve read bits and pieces on him, I’m looking forward to reading a full biography sometime soon.

The Republican Party of Murderers

So Karl “Pig Vomit” Rove, the Republican go-to hatchet man for George W. Bush, has laid it out – liberals are traitors, trying to get the US soldiers in Iraq killed, and by extension, anyone who does not support the war (or 59% of the US population according the latest Gallop poll) is a traitor. This is what needs to be said.

Make absolutely no mistake, the leadership of the Republican party, the conservative ideologues in the power structure of the GOP, are murderers. By pushing their foreign policy agenda, developed in the 1990’s by the Project For A New American Century and supported by various right-wing think tanks, media outlets and talking heads, based on invading Iraq, and establishing a military presence in the Middle East region, they were able to use the terrorist attacks of 9/11 to justify war.

To this date, not our government, nor any ally, have produced credible proof that Iraq had any Weapons of Mass Destruction, was developing a nuclear weapons program, was aiding terrorists in the planning or execution of 9/11, or constituted any, legitimate threat to the national security of the United States. These were the justifications for war given to the American people, the United Nations and the world.

The Bush administration diverted attention from the main front of the war on terror – Afghanistan – in order to pursue their premeditated ideological goals. Our own longtime allies either wanted no part, or have now admitted through the release of classified documents that the justifications for war were fraudulent.

Now we are faced with daily bombings and sniper attacks on US troops, the inability to secure the majority of the nation outside military installations and the “green zone,” and a religious divide in Iraq bordering on civil war. At home, each month our military fails to meet recruiting goals, even after lowering the numbers repeatedly.

Where are the calls for national service from political leaders, religious leaders and the media who all pushed the Bush/PNAC agenda? Why is the base of the right wing so willing to engage in bloody conflicts abroad, yet scoff at the idea of enlisting themselves or their children?

Bush, Rove, Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Perle and the rest of the architects and salesmen of this war sold every American citizen and every American soldier a phony bill of goods. They created an atmosphere of fear based on lies, and placed American soldiers (and soldiers of all nations who participated, for that matter) in harms way based on those lies. Every death, every limb lost, every family destroyed over the loss of a parent or child, is the direct responsibility of these people, these murderers, whose policies continue to get American soldiers killed and wounded with each new car bomb detonated. – originally posted on MySpace
