Concert Review: Buckcherry @ the Newport Music Hall, 11/29/99

Buckcherry are an acquired taste. If you dig the harder end of the hair/glam metal of the 1980s, you probably could relate to them. At at time when bad teen pop, nu-metal and hip-hop were dominating the radio, Buckcherry appeared with an ode to cocaine and hedonism.

In short bursts, Buckcherry is a fun band. Live, that’s another matter, as the band basically had two modes – over the top scuzzy sunset strip rock, and ballads. Or, at the time, a ballad. The repetitiveness got old quickly, as the band didn’t have much of a catalog (re: diversity) to bring to the table for a band that isn’t going to stray from a rather predictable formula to begin with.

Openers Cupcakes (or at least I think they opened) were a boring, post-punk mess that belonged on a different bill. Maybe if I saw or heard them now I’d like them, but at the time they were just…awful.

Recipe: Oreo Cupcakes

I found this recipe for Oreo Cupcakes and followed, but with some changes.

Ingredients:
1 box of chocolate cake mix
1 package of Oreos (I used Double Stuffed)
8 oz. (1 pack) of cream cheese
1/2 cup (1 stick) of butter
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
2-3 cups of powdered sugar

Directions:
Line a regular size cupcake tin with liner.
Split an Oreo for each liner, all the cream on one side.
Place the uncreamed half off to the side for later.
Make the box of chocolate cake per the directions.
Take half of the uncreamed Oreo halves, place them in a plastic bag and smash them to bits.
Drop the Oreo bits in to the the cake batter and mix in.
Fill each of the cupcake liners about 2/3rds full.
Bake on 350 for about 15-20 minutes, check with a toothpick for doneness.

While cupcakes are cooking, take remaining Oreos, place in a food processor, and chop until very fine.
Combine (room temperature) cream cheese & butter, along with vanilla extra in a bowl.
Add finely chopped Oreos and mix.
Add two to three cups of powdered sugar, to taste.

Take the other half of the uncreamed Oreo sides and split with knife.

After cupcakes are done and cooled, apply the frosting and top with split Oreo side.
