Unsung (Helmet cover): A new update to the recordings archive, this was originally posted on MySpace on 7/25/05 with this brief note: “So I decided to do a cover, of a 90s alt-metal band no less. Helmet’s album “Meantime” was (and still is) one of my favorite heavy albums of the early nineties alternative music explosion. It combines maximum riffage with some odd cut ‘n paste lyrics, sort of a more straight-forward version of Jawbox. The good thing about recording a cover is that you can look up the lyrics, and then realize you’ve been singing them wrong for over a decade and correct them. The original song is in Drop-D tuning with power chords, lots of Page Hamilton riffing going on. This song always sounded lyrically really dark to me, so I decided to approach it as a dirty alt-country song instead of a riff-heavy rocker.” Still my favorite Helmet album, not my favorite cover.
